What India VIX measures
India VIX is calculated from the bid and ask prices of out-of-the-money Nifty 50 options in the near and next monthly expiries. The result is an annualised volatility figure. A VIX of 14 means the options market expects Nifty to move within about ±14% over a year, or about ±4% over the next 30 days, with roughly two-thirds probability.
NSE adopted the method from the CBOE's VIX and has published India VIX since April 2008.

What VIX levels mean for option premiums
Option prices rise and fall with implied volatility. Using a Black-Scholes model with Nifty at 25,000, 12 days to expiry and a 6.5% interest rate, an at-the-money call is worth:
| India VIX (used as IV) | ATM call premium | Per lot of 65 | Short straddle collects, per lot |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | About ₹210 | About ₹13,600 | About ₹23,600 |
| 14 | About ₹280 | About ₹18,200 | About ₹33,000 |
| 20 | About ₹390 | About ₹25,300 | About ₹47,000 |
| 27 | About ₹515 | About ₹33,500 | About ₹63,500 |
Figures are model prices for illustration, using NSE's Nifty lot size of 65 units. Real option IVs differ from India VIX by strike and expiry, but move with it.
A rise in VIX from 14 to 27, as in March 2026, nearly doubles the ATM premium in this model, from about ₹280 to about ₹515. Option buyers who entered before the rise gain from vega even if Nifty barely moves; sellers who entered at VIX 14 face mark-to-market losses on positions whose premiums have nearly doubled.
What VIX levels mean for strategies
| India VIX | Market condition | Strategies traders often use | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Below 12 | Calm, premiums thin | Long straddles and strangles ahead of events; debit spreads | Theta erodes long options quickly if nothing happens |
| 12 to 18 | Normal | Iron condors, short strangles with stops; directional spreads | Event dates such as RBI policy and results |
| 18 to 25 | Stressed | Defined-risk selling: iron flies, credit spreads; smaller size | Sharp moves through short strikes; margin increases |
| Above 25 | Crisis | Hedged structures, or staying out; buyers often sell into spikes | Gaps, wide bid-ask spreads, exchange margin additions |
Many option sellers use VIX as a position-size dial: fewer lots when VIX is high because margins and move sizes both rise.
VIX and the Nifty
India VIX usually moves opposite to Nifty: falls in the index push VIX up, rallies push it down. The relationship is strongest in sharp sell-offs. The March 2026 spike came with a sharp fall in Nifty; by August 2026, with VIX back near 10, the index had stabilised.
The VIX does not predict direction. It measures the size of the move the options market expects, in either direction.
Rules that change VIX behaviour
- One weekly expiry per exchange since 20 November 2024. Since September 2025 these are Nifty 50 on NSE (Tuesday) and Sensex on BSE (Thursday). India VIX uses monthly Nifty options, so it is less affected by expiry-day swings than weekly option IVs.
- Larger contracts and upfront premium. Contract sizes rose from 20 November 2024, and option buyers have paid the full premium upfront since 1 February 2025. Both raised the cost of small option trades, and SEBI's FY26 study found active individual F&O traders fell 18% in FY26.
- SEBI's FY26 studies found that about 97% of sampled individual F&O traders mainly bought options, and that 59% of index option turnover on NSE and BSE was in contracts expiring the same day (70% in FY25). Same-day options carry high gamma and theta risk but little vega, so they react more to Nifty's moves than to changes in VIX.
How to use VIX in QuantPower
- Set a VIX rule for the strategies you build in the strategy builder, for example running a short strangle only when India VIX is between 12 and 20, and check India VIX before you start the bot.
- Compare an option's implied volatility with India VIX to see whether a strike is rich or cheap relative to the market.
- Backtest strategies across both calm and stressed periods, such as July to September 2025 and March 2026, before going live.
- Protect short positions with an MTM stop loss, which exits when the combined loss reaches your limit, whatever VIX does.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal India VIX level?
There is no official normal level. Traders often treat readings below 12 as calm and above 20 as stressed; since 2012, India VIX has closed as low as 9.15 and as high as 83.6.
What was India VIX's highest and lowest?
In NSE's daily data since 2012, as compiled by CEIC, the highest close was 83.6 on 24 March 2020, during the Covid crash, and the lowest was 9.15 on 26 December 2025.
Does a high VIX mean the market will fall?
No. It means options are pricing large moves in either direction. VIX usually rises during falls because demand for protective puts increases, but a high VIX can also precede sharp rallies.
How does VIX affect option sellers?
Higher VIX means higher premiums to collect but also larger expected moves and higher margins. Sellers who entered at low VIX face mark-to-market losses when VIX rises.
How is India VIX different from an option's IV?
India VIX is one number for the whole Nifty options market over 30 days. Each option has its own IV, which varies by strike and expiry. They move together but are not equal.
